Question:

Race between F-16 and F1 Mclaren?

Which would win in a straight line race starting from a dead stop. Give three positions for decision, 1/4 mile, 1 mile & 2 miles.

Any serious comments on the outcome are welcome. Like, I believe the Mclaren will take the F-16 at any distance on the ground.

  1. Mclaren would probably win for the 1/4 Mile (But might be close)

F-16 would be close to taking off  after a mile and would be gone after 2

  2. At 1/4 mile the Mclaren is ahead. it's light weight scores, and the F-16 engines need time to spool up to full power..

At 1 mile the F-16 is ahead and airborne.

At 2 miles the F-16 is climbing like a homesick Angel. The Mclaren driver is reaching for clean underwear as he/she has run out of anywhere to stop.

  3. McLaren would win hands down..with possible exception of the 2 miles distance...F-16 isn't designed to win land races :)

  4. obviously the F-16 will win after a certain distance, it can go several times faster than a mclaren, it's entirely down to acceleration for the small distances. I'd guess that the mclaren would win for the 1/4 and 1 miles, but lose anything from 2 miles up.

  5. Well, if the F-16 spooled up its engines just before starting the race and then just released the brake, it might win the quarter mile, and I'm very confident that it would win the mile and definitely the 2 mile. The reason jets have an acceleration disadvantage is because they are pushing against air to get going, while the car is pushing off a solid surface (the ground). But the jets engines are so powerful that they make up for that disadvantage, and once it gets going, it's gone. The F-16 has a top speed of over twice the speed of sound.  That's over 1,500 mph. The F1 only has a top speed of around 250 mph.

  6. the F-100 and the F-110 the F-16 used to take 6 to 8 seconds to spool up to full afterburner.

however the new F-16s have electronic controls controlling the engines instead of old hydromechanical controls. Now the F-16s equipped with this kind of system can go from idle to full afterburner in two seconds. This type of system was first introduced in 1986.

acceleration of the f-16 at full afterburner is 3 Gs

for The F1 its 2.4 Gs.

however, since the F1 will get moving earlier, the quartermile will be close. I don't have the forumlas nor the calculations but the 1/4 will be close for sure.

anything longer, the Viper will win it.

for the 1 mile, the F-16 will be airborne, and once airborne, it will accelerate and go much faster than anything on the ground. it is impossible for the F-16 to stay on the ground at that point. the aircraft will have a tendency to leap up and the gear will not be able to stand it either.

2 miles isn't worth discussing. The F1 only has a max speed of what? 250PMH? while the F-16 has mach 2.4. The F-16 has been known to take off from a 7000 runway, and by the time it passes the entire length of it, it is already at 500 knots+. ( something like 589 mph)

    **EDIT**

in the video it is an F-18

    not an f-16

and although it has two engines, the F-16 has a higher trust to weight ratio, also known as, more powerful engine and it is lighter.

not having afterburner is important. afterburner on the newest engines can double their thrust output.

for the F-16, its AB is 150% effective. 1.5x max thrust. basically, with AB what your doing is dumping fuel into the hot exhaust to create an explosion directed backwards.

  7. The car would take the 1/4 mile.  Thats it.  It would never beat the jet at a mile or even 2 miles.

  8. if it was from a dead stop...the Mclaren would probably win in the 1/4 and 1..but as soon as the f-16 gets of the ground..which wont be that long...the car has no chance....so it would probably lose on the 2 mile...

  9. i think, Mclaren will win at all positions.

  10. 1/4 mile to the McLaren, and that is all. F16 the rest of the way, hands down.
