Race for QB Peyton Manning signing narrows down with Cardinals, Jets and others out-NFL News
The competition for signing free agent quarterback, Peyton Manning, has further consolidated to include a new contender out of the blue, while leaving out other hopefuls. However, the player is still a free agent.
As of the latest, different reports have linked the player to hosting the San Francisco 49ers, where he also underwent a medical examination and threw ball for them.
Yet nothing has come out of the meeting that could lead to ascertain the chances of reaching a deal between the two.
However, the session makes 49ers to be the new and certain contenders for the quarterback.
The player was released by Colts before the bonus deadline of March 08, 2012 and since then has met a number of teams in response to their desire to sign him off.
In addition to 49ers, the QB is reported to have thrown for the Denver Broncos.
Following the visit, Broncos’ executive vice president of football operations, John Elway, and the head coach, John Fox, confirmed that the player looked great and comfortable.
Elway tweeted:
"We enjoyed visiting with Peyton today in N.C. He threw the ball great and looked very comfortable out there. Watching him throw today was the next step in this important process for our team and Peyton. It was a productive visit and went well."
As a next move, Peyton is likely to throw for the Tennessee Titans at an unknown location on Saturday, March 17, 2012. He has already undergone medical examination for them and the team is said to be satisfied with his recovery and fitness level.
In view of these developments, many commentators have pinpointed the Denver Broncos and Tennessee Titans emerging as clearer hopefuls of the player’s signing.
Meanwhile, the Arizona Cardinals have opted out of the competition for Manning’s signing and the New York Jets and Houston Texans are already out of the contest.
Cardinals’ coach, Ken Whisenhunt, said on Friday, March 16, 2012 that they were no longer interested in pursuing Manning. The team also confirmed to have given quarterback, Kevin Kolb, $7 million roster bonus, which leaves the team content with him on the
starting line.
Peyton Manning, in the meantime, is expected to reach a decision regarding his future in the next week. All the talk, visits and meetings around the possibility of the player’s signing are inconclusive until then.
