Race to sign Wayne Rooney ends!
The biggest news in football for the past one week were the rumours of Wayne Rooney’s exit from Manchester United, and not surprisingly number of clubs had already been linked with a bid for the English striker.
Daily Mail, one of the leading newspapers in England had reported that the owner of English champions Chelsea, Roman Abramovich had given his manager a go ahead on signing Rooney.
However, Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti had kept himself at a distance. He had been quoted saying that he never likes it when other clubs talk about departure of his players. Therefore, he said that he would not want to comment
on the player until Rooney officially leaves Manchester United.
Ancelotti who is always believed to be a man with class has proved it once again; he said that he has utter most respect for Manchester United the club, the fans and off course Sir Alex Ferguson. He had told that he would not want
to encourage any rumours about Chelsea looking to bring Rooney in and make use of the tense situation at Old Trafford. Ancelotti had said that Ferguson and Rooney needed to sit down and discuss it as adults, and hopefully things will work out.
Manchester City on the other hand were believed to have already lined up a weekly wage package for Wayne that goes up to 250,000 pounds a week. While Chelsea Owner Roman Abramovich was reported to be willing to spend only 20 million
pounds on Rooney, there had been no reports of how much they would have offered him as a weekly wage.
On the other hand Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp had also joined the race and said that there is no reason why Tottenham could not bring in a player like Wayne Rooney. Redknapp said that he would talk to the club chairman for
a possible bid and see what happens.
Redknapp said that he was surprised by the decision made by Rooney. He added that the English striker must be very firm in his stance or else it would not have been that easy to stand against a man like Ferguson.
Nonetheless, today everyone was stunned when it was revealed that Wayne Rooney had signed a new contract with his club, Manchester United.
Manchester United’s official website reported that Sir Alex Ferguson told in a press conference that, "Sometimes, when you're in a club, it can be hard to realize just how big it is and it takes something like the events of the
last few days to make you understand. I think Wayne now understands what a great club Manchester United is”
Furthermore, he added, "I'm pleased he has accepted the challenge to guide the younger players and establish himself as one of United's great players. It shows character and belief in what we stand for.”
The 25 year old striker concluded by saying that, "I'm signing a new deal in the absolute belief that the management, coaching staff, board and owners are totally committed to making sure United maintains its proud winning history
- which is the reason I joined the club in the first place. I'm sure the fans over the last week have felt let down by what they've read and seen. But my position was from concern over the future. The fans have been brilliant with me since I arrived and it's
up to me through my performances to win them over again."
