1. Yes, I've heard of "Silent Spring" and know about Rachel Carson and her push to eradicate DDT.

Whether she belongs in the top 100 scientists and thinkers depends on how they define it. She would definitely fall under the top 100 most INFLUENTIAL people in the environmental movement. So if influence and impact are the criteria, then yes. If they are focusing on actual depth and uniqueness of the science being done..research, development of new techniques and ideas, etc., then no. Her research was not particularly brilliant or unique (like Einstein, Darwin, Newton, Faraday, Curie, etc), but her tenacity at spreading the importance of her findings was impressive.

As for the ridiculous idea that she is a "mass murderer" and that DDT is not really bad for the environment, take anything said in "junkscience.com" as what it is, junk. That site basically collects whatever pro-industry, ultra-conservative drivel that is written, compiles it on their site, and pretends that it actually has merit.

  2. yes i have heard of her before, in biology class.

i think she deserves to be in the top 100 because if she had not discovered the harmful effects of DDT we might have used it for a lot longer

I know that her work is the reason it was outlawed in the us and why alot of other countries stopped using it.

  3. Top 100 scientists? No. Top 100 mass murderers would be more fitting. All of the claims made in Silent Spring turned out to be bogus, but the book kicked off an anti-DDT campaign that has resulted in 96 million deaths from malaria.

  4. First Name: Edward

Last Name or first letter of your last name A

    1) Did you know Carson's works ("Silent Spring", campaign to ban the use of DDT in the United States, and etc.) had a powerful impact on the environmental movement?

    yes

2)Do think Rachel Carson deserve to be name in "The Time 100: Scientists and Thinkers"?

    NO

the link to The Time 100: Scientists and Thinkers: http://www.time.com/time/time100/scienti...

    3) What are some information you knew, heard or thoughts you have about Rachel Carson?

Rachel Carson turned a lot of people on to the problems associated with Pesticides, but she was also sensationalist rather than scientifically accurate. She should be praised for she was way before her time, but now we know a lot more about the environment and should look at modern scientific research. Rachel Carson was a pioneer, led the way for many others to follow but read her book with the knowledge that it is not the gospel.

  5. UMMM.... WHO? SORRY, GED HERE, AND FOR GOOD REASON!
