Rachel Elizabeth Kelly wins Girls 100m butterfly gold: Day six – 3rd World Junior Championships
Rachel Elizabeth Kelly of Great Britain claimed the gold medal of Girls 100m butterfly meet on the sixth day of the 3rd World Junior Championships, scheduled by the Federation Internationale De Natation (FINA) on Sunday, August 21, in Lima,
Peru.
The 17-year-old Elizabeth Kelly improved the championship record of the event, by reporting in a wonderful time of 59.37 seconds. Her time was 0.10 seconds under the previous mark of 59.47 seconds, made by Natsuki Akiyama of Japan in 2008. She was 3.31 seconds
away from improving the world record of 56.06 seconds, set by Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden at the 2009 World Championships in Rome.
The British swimmer was followed by Rino Hosoda of Japan, who was just 0.02 seconds slower than her and earned the silver medal of the event, by reporting in a time of 59.39 seconds. Hosoda maintained a lead of 0.25 seconds over her closest rival, Alexandra
Wenk of Germany, who clocked a time of 59.64 seconds for the bronze medal.
In the meantime, Jud Ignacio Sorribes of Spain emerged as the fourth fastest swimmer of the event, as she remained only 0.06 seconds behind the bronze medallist and posted a time of 59.70 seconds. Sorribes was trailed by Kendyl Stewart of United States,
as she was just 0.06 seconds slower than the Spanish swimmer and clocked a time of 59.76 seconds for fifth position.
Meanwhile, Vanessa Mohr emerged as the sixth best finisher of the event, as she remained marginally away from her former swimmer and submitted a time of 59.82 seconds. Justine Bruno of France was the seventh finalist of the event, as she stayed 0.43 seconds
behind Mohr and ended her swim in 1 minute and 00.35 seconds. The last swimmer was Noemie Thomas of Canada, who was 0.46 seconds away from Bruno and ended her swim in a time of 1 minute and 00.81 seconds.
Furthermore, the session ended with the completion of all swimming events, while the podium finishers were awarded medals for their superb efforts.
