Rachel Jennings holds on to her lead in second round of Allianz Ladies Slovak Open
The overnight leader, Rachel Jennings further consolidated her position at the Allianz Ladies Slovak Open at Gray Bear Golf Club, when she pulled in a stunning second round four-under, 68, to extend her lead halfway through the tournament for the moment.
Jennings had moved into the second round with an overnight lead of one shot over her contender. She finished four-under, 68 to finish nine-under on the aggregate, two shots clear of the fast approaching contenders.
Jennings is one of the rookies on the tour and is looking for her maiden victory on the tour. The 22-year-old qualified to play on the tour in December and made her debut in last month’s Lalla Meryem Cup in Morocco. She moved over to finish tied for 11th
at the Turkish Airlines Ladies Open, Eighth in Portugal, and 35th last week in Germany.
Opening front nine in the morning, Jennings fell in for an early bogey at par-five, fifth but quickly resorted to defensive play for the next holes. She went ahead to card five birdies and finished on top of the leaderboard, with some of the players yet
to tee-off.
“I played good but it was a bit scrappier than yesterday. I didn’t hit it as good but the bad shots were okay,” said the 22-year-old LET rookie, from Stoke-on-Trent. “I’ve never been in this position so I’m just enjoying every moment. I might not be in this
position by the end of the day.”
Virginie Lagoutte-Clement, the fast approaching Frenchwoman finished two shots behind the leader while Swedish Caroline Hedwall closed her day for six-under on the aggregate. Clement has performed well in the season so far and strengthened her first-round
score of 69 with a 68 on the second day.
“I feel very good for today. I hit some irons very well and my putting is not bad. It’s a great day today,” said the 32-year-old from Montélimar.
Turkish Airlines ladies Open winner of last week, Netherland’s Christel Boeljon, England’s Lisa Hall and many of the top guns of the tour are to tee-off in the afternoon according to the schedule and the Jennings will need a bit of luck to get away with
the lead.
