Question:

Racing pigeon How to care....?

I am caring for a racing pigeon that I found unable to fly. I rescued it to stop farm cat getting it. I have reported it but the owner doesn't seem interested in claiming it back although I made 2 calls to him. We have had him now for 6 days and gave him a test flight today but it only managed a few yards then came down. He looks well and is eating and drinking, also preening. There is no obvious damage to him.

He does appear to have lice...I think....I spotted a couple today so will look for a treatment in the morning.

Can lice cause him not to be able to fly? What else do I need to know about caring for him in the meantime?

Also are there any rescue places that would take on a pigeon not able to fly?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  1. Even if you're in London, I suggest you check out http://www.pigeons.biz and go to their Forum.  There are a lot of folks there who have rescued birds (including folks in Australia and Europe) so they may have answers for you as well as info on how to help the bird itself

  2. throw it between a rock and a hard place and make sure you dont get stuck

  3. don't get his wings wet becouse birds cant fly when their wings are wet
