Question:

Racism in New Zealand? Compare to Canada.?

Suppose a asian family hike about a mountain in Canada.

I hardly doubt there'd be any racism present, or this family wouldn't feel welcome among the western people. Multi-cultural society.

But how about New Zealand? Thank you.

  1. There has been a few issues with SOME people here in Nz. I know that many asians do have SOME issues with people being racist. I would say these people have not moved far from where they were brought up to be honest!

On the whole I would say that most kiwis are tolerant and welcoming of new people to NZ....there has been large influxes of various asian groups coming here...especially recently and there are some parts of NZ that have large asian populations...for example in Auckland the second language in some areas is Korean!

Its very multicultural here now....especially after having lived in the UK, I feel we are more tolerant than many over there are towards immigrants......( thats ANY immigrants....it seems they are British and anything not british is not good...its really an us and them mentality).

  2. Agree wholeheartedly with Vic P.

  3. most likely

  4. yea in NZ people dont really care, there is always abit of racism no matter what country you go to, but i dont think you are likely to come across much of it in NZ or canada

  5. I doubt if the Asian family would find any problems anywhere they traveled in New Zealand.  Given its proximity to SE Asia, there has been a big influx in the Asian population in NZ. The family should be able to blend in with the others in the NZ society without any impact.

However, in NZ's past, there has been racism, take a look how the native Maori people have been treated!

    Hope this helps - M

  6. I live in one of the most "treked" parts of NZ and Im telling you with 100% confidence an Asian family would have no problem at all regarding racism.

They might have a problem if they dont take the right gear though!!!

AND I would like yto refer to the answer that says "Look at the problems the Maoris have have been treated".

Compared to any other country the British colonised they have had the best deal of the lot and I take offence to the statement regarding how they have been treated as I am sure most Maoris would!!!

WE ARE ONE wherever ones country of origin was in New Zealand.

  7. I have been studying / working in New Zealand for the past three years and although I am not asian / indian etc., I have come across quite a few here in NZ. From what I know about NZ, racists are practically non-exsistant here. You would probably find the odd racist in a few towns or cities but it's not a big issue here and people are generally great. If you show respect you will get respect.

  8. Mareeclara gives a valid assessment.

But, to be able to answer this question with a certain amount of insight, one would have to have lived (or at least spent a helluva lot of time) in both countries.

I doubt that there would be much difference, but then, I know of only one country's aspects of the question.
