Question:

Rack and Pinion wear or leak?

We bought a 1998 Honda Accord (108K miles) couple of days back. We are noticing that the Steering wheel is stiff and the wheel would not re-center itself after a turn. Would this be because of a rack and pinion leak? Do we need to replace the entire rack and pinion system? What would happen to the vehicle when driven in such condition?

Any help or suggesstion would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Your power steering pump is empty or it has stopped working,or the car needs an alinement.Could need both.

  2. Take it to a shop and have them put it on a lift. Look at the bellows boots and see if you see leakage. If you do, rack replacement and a four wheel alignment is due. As far as the steering wheel not re-centering, it could be the rack as well as other front end components. Tell the shop what's going on and they can get you an estimate on all. Rack and alignment by itself with a nationwide warranty will run you 700-800 dollars alone installed.

  3. didnt you test drive it before buying.. anyways check your fluid or your belt..... do you see any leaks.. under the front end.... really theres not much you can do but replace a hose with them if they arent leaking at a hose best to replace.... so really be smart to have it check
