I've noticed some people put there radar detectors as high as their rear view mirrows, and some directly flat on the dash, and some in the middle. What is the difference between these 3 positions, and which one is best?

Also I have a Escort passport 6500 i think it is, and i soon want to upgrade to the 8500 x if that makes any difference, i just want to make sure i get the most out of my detectors, thanks!

  1. Ideally the unit should be placed as high as possible -- you can actually get a radar 'bounce' off the hood of your car and gain a precious second or two before you are nailed by the cops.

  2. Higher is definitely better for a radar detector. Placing your radar detector higher in the vehicle provides a better opportunity to pick up those speed traps hidden around the next corner or over the top of the next hill, as well as the signals from POP or instant-on radar guns that are being use more often.

Most radar detectors claim they will detect police laser, but by the time they 'detect' laser, it's already too late to slow down. A laser is a very narrow beam of light, and it only has to hit your vehicle for 0.2 seconds to record your speed.

If you are concerned about police laser (LIDAR), your only alternative is a laser jammer. A laser jammer detects and jams the laser gun, allowing you time to adjust your speed if necessary. Like radar detectors, laser jammers are also LEGAL to use in nearly every state. There are a number of laser/radar combo systems, like the Escort Passport 9500ci, which includes the new Escort ZR4 laser jammer.

In a perfect world, no one would ever make mistakes and we would never go over the speed limit. However, it's good to have a radar detector and/or laser jammer as a reminder to watch your speed as you're going down the highway. Good luck!

  3. Higher is always better. The higher up the quicker it will pick up the signal and sound the alarm. Say your about to crest a hill and the speed trap is on the other side.. your detector will pick up the signal sooner if its mounted right under the rear view.

Another good thing about sticking your detector under the rear view is it kind of conceals it from police.
