Radek Stepanek defeats Andrey Golubev 6-3, 7-6(2)
World number 29 Radek Stepanek of Czech Republic prevailed over Kazakh Andrey Golubev, ranked 101st in the world, in straight sets 6-3, 7-6(2) in the second round at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati, Ohio
on Wednesday. The Czech took one hour and 37 minutes to beat Golubev.
Stepanek and the Kazakh won their serve in the first seven games of the opening set to take the score to 4-3 in favour of the Czech. The 32-year-old broke Golubev in the eighth game and consolidated on it to grab the set 6-3. The
Czech kept his first serve percentage at 73 percent and converted seventeen of the 22 first serves into points in the first set.
Golubev drew the first blood in the second set, breaking the Czech in the sixth game and winning his next service game to race to a 5-2 lead. However, Stepanek did not allow his opponent to serve out the set as he broke the Kazakh
in the ninth game, clinching three consecutive games to equalise the score at 5-5. The set was taken into a tie-break and the Czech captured three mini-breaks to win it 7-2.
Stepanek will meet world number 1 Novak Djokovic of Serbia in the third round.
Philipp Kohlschreiber beats Feliciano Lopez 6-1, 6-4
German Philipp Kohlschreiber, ranked 47th in the world, upset world number 25 Feliciano Lopez of Spain in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 to move to the round of 16 at the Western and Southern Open. The match lasted for just
an hour and seven minutes.
Kohlschreiber thrashed the Spaniard in the first set as he dropped only one game in the entire set. The German broke Lopez in the second game and won his next service game, blazing forward to a 3-0 lead. Kohlschreiber broke the
Spaniard again in the sixth game and served out the set in the seventh game, grabbing it 6-1.
The five feet and ten inches tall faced stiff competition in the second set as he and his opponent held their serve in the first eight games, taking the score to 4-4. Kohlschreiber, however, managed to break the Spaniard in the
ninth game and consolidated on it to clinch the set 6-4. The 27-year-old fired four aces and converted one of the two break points in the second set.
Kohlschreiber will play sixth seed Gael Monfils of France in the round of 16.
