My cat was just diagnosed today with being hyperthyroid.

The best plan of attack is Radiation Iodine Therapy. Anyone have a cat or dog go through this?

Any complications at all?

Besides cost, it sounds pretty effective.

  1. The thing is that if you give radiation iodine for hyperthyroidism, then the cat will become hypothyroid

The radiation iodine will kill off the thyroid gland

So the cat will need to take a thyroid supplement for the rest of its life or else it will become very very tired and eventually die

You need the hormone produced by thyroid gland to maintain your metabolism and other bodily functions. So its important that the cat will receive thyroid supplements

For humans, the thyroid supplement is called Synthroid. I'm not sure what its called for cats

  2. Actually, this has a great success rate and it is the best way to go

As far as cost, it may be a bigger outlay but it is a lot cheaper then giving the pills as you would have to run to the vets for blood tests

There shouldn't be any complications. Best of luck

edited to add. Unlike humans, cats cannot get hypothyroid
