  1. There are more factors than just installing an FM antenna, but generally you can get good reception up to about 100 miles.  If you're lucky, you may be able to reliably pull in stations at 120 or (if *very* lucky) 150 miles away.  Anything beyond that is relying on temporary propagation phenomena which, while sometimes allowing reception 1,000 miles away, is variable, location-specific, relys on carefully interconnecting multiple ariels, and pretty noisy.

The type of antenna is important, whether it's a dipole (omnidirectional wire/pole) or a Yagi (directional eith many elements), for example, and the length and/or number of elements.

There are also interference considerations.  If the spectrum is crowded where you are, you may be limited to getting the local stations.  Note that nearby stations often wipe out stations close (in frequency) to the one you are tying to get because the filters in radios aren't perfect.  So, if you're trying to pick up a distant 99.9 FM and there's a station in your city at 100.1, you will have a difficult time without other filters.

Interference is likely your worst enemy, since you'll probably "see" more than one station at the frequency you want.    Generally, a directional antenna is preferred because it rejects interference originating from other than where the antenna is pointed.

The quality of the radio is also important, both in its ability to receive the weak signals and in filtering out the other stations that you don't want so that it doesn't get overloaded by a nearby, strong signal.

    Other factors affecting reception are

      - terrain between you and the transmitter,

      - atmospheric conditions,

      - nearby structures (like buildings) that reflect signals and create multipath,

      - transmit power of the radio stations,

      - stereo or mono reception.
