Radio Shack's Motorola GMRS walkie talkies that reaches 18 miles. Has anybody got that far before?

  1. The only time you will get that far is either over an open field or water.

    Anywhere there are trees, buildings, hills, or even people... you will not get that far.

    Those walkie talkies get about 1-2 miles in the city and maybe 3-4 miles in the country.


  2. The "18 Miles" advertised on those walkie-talkies is an "up to" estimate.  To get the 18 mile range, you have to be on a high point with no obstructions (high hill), broadcasting to a low point with no obstructions (valley).  By obstructions, I mean no trees, no buildings, no anything that could block the radio signal.  That's the only way those radios can actually reach that distance.
