In the late 1940's, I listened to a radio broadcast that began..."Why do I love you? I love you not only for what you are but for what you make of me." I can't recall if these words are from a song, a poem or what. What I need is the author, the name of the piece, if possible, the name of the performer.

  1. I did a little research and found the poem.

    Love

    I love you,

Not only for what you are,

    But what I am

    When I am with you.

    I love you,

    Not only for what

    You have made of yourself,

But for what you make of me.

    I love you,

    For the part of me

    That you bring out.

    I love you

    For putting your hand

    Into my heaped up heart

    And passing over

    All the foolish, weak things

    That you can’t help

    Dimly seeing there

    And for drawing out

    Into the light

    All the beautiful belongings

That no one else had looked

    Quite far enough to find

I found it at the link below. .The second link below is the google search, which also yeilded some pages in Italian, which I don't speak. The translation function on Google doesn't seem to be working today, maybe it will give you the author if it works of you.

I don't know who the performer was. If my dad were still alive he would probably know, as he was a performer radio performer in the post-war years (Hawaian guitar)
