Question:

Radio jobs in Bakersfield, CA?

I called KELLY 95.3 last week to make a song request, and I spoke with a gent named Matt. He said I had a soothing voice, and that I should get into the radio business. He also asked me how old I was, and I said that I was 18. Can I start looking for a radio job now, or do I have to wait until I turn 21? I don't have my license yet, but I'll get it soon.

  1. First step is to record a demo tape and send it out along with a resume. Most stations will put you in their promotions teams first, which is where you drive the vans and hand stuff out. But if they know you have a good voice (after hearing the tape) they might let you voice a few promotional announcements.

You can be 18 to do that, even to drive the van. As long as you have a clean record.

PS - They are called promotions assistants.

  2. i live in Bakersfield, and i work for a company that has 4 radio stations, the people you see driving the vans are promotions assistants, I'm one.

as far as getting a job, i would look in the phone book and find KELLYs radio in there and get the front office number and ask if theres any open positions available.

hope all goes well good luck

  3. Start now, its a perfect time. You have to create a demo tape and send it out to stations. Go to http://www.radioandtvjobs.com, there's listings on there. The best way to start is just work for a small, crappy station for free and get some experience under your belt for your resume. Just call KHTY or KGEO, see if they need someone to operate the board, and they may bring you in on a part-time basis.
