  1. This is one of those things that is best not to be a surprise. My suggestion would be to give him a card with a hand-written note that says "Gift Certificate" then put £100 TOWARDS a new Microphone. Or just include a crisp £100 note.

There are so many types and options in many price ranges that he should probably select his mic on his own. There are many on eBay - many of which are not suitable for radio work. You won't know the difference - hopefully he will. Other sellers won't ship out of the US.

You might also be able to find a good used mic in the UK, if you live in a large city. Check local non-BBC stations. They may have an older model around the engineer's booth they'd be willing to sell. Also used and new audio equipment shops could point you in the right direction. And the classified sections of newspapers and other internet sites.

EV is good, so is Sennheiser and half a dozen other brands. Good luck & Happy Birthday to your boyfriend.

  2. ebay

  3. The only mic I've ever used is the Electro Voice. It's the industry standard. And it's not cheap.
