how do radios stations get there names such as wrrv or wpdh

  1. call letters (new or changed) for radio and television stations have to be approved by the FCC...there can't be 2 stations usin' the same calls at the same time, even if they're thousands of miles apart...in other words, you can't have WVYB in daytona beach, florida and WVYB in albany, new york...

    many stations nowadys get their calls from a database from the FCC that contains 'retired' calls...most of the time, they do this simply because it doesn't take any brain power to create unique calls...

    back in the day...many of the calls were in reference to, say, the city of origin (WRVA was for Ricmond VirginiA) or represented the station's owners (WGAP-World's Greatest Aluminum Plant) or to their format (many easy listenin' stations would always have EZ in their calls)...

    i think the best calls i ever heard for a station was an old school FM rock station in detroit (WWWW) as well as the legendary radio WOWO from fort wayne, indiana...
