  1. Believe me, I have been DYING to do the same thing too...for dance music.  However, for one it takes a HUGE amount of money (think about spending $100 million, at the very least).    And with that you would have to BUY an existing station since the dial is crowded.

It's only something major radio corporations can pull off.  And being NYC, it actually would be a BAD investment to buy radio because your "format" would have to be as conservative as possible in order to make some sort of profit.

There ARE stations (mainly in the AM) that do "lease" on air time for a certain price.  If you don't mind the sound quality or the fact that the AM stations that do least such time, at night, do not travel very far at all, that may be an option.

  2. First find a million dollars...

  3. It's going to be very hard for you.

Licenses are in a lottery.  A piece of the air, is gold bullion.

Warner Bros posted a first quarter profit of about 109 million dollars at the start of the year, they, like a lot of others, are looking at overseas startups because it is easier.

The African and Eastern Block and some Asian Markets.

The FCC at this stage is in a mess when it comes to straightening out the airwaves dilemma that's about to happen again, as we go through another millennium of changes.

Or you can go pirate, that won't last long.

You can move to Australia and build a ten milliwatt transmitter and broadcast to one square block, stealing someones assigned frequency.  (Australia you can broadcast legally if it is under 10 milliwatts) Used to service the tourism market in a captive audience market.

I went through the throws of getting a broadcast license in Oz after leaving my last station as a personality, by this time I'd put in over a decade of service.  Licenses then cost about $20,000.  By the time I had started my interest, the price shot up as a lottery value exceeding $1,000,000. the highest bidder got the license.

That was only for the paper work, land surveys, listener surveys for a new services, and then the usual background checks.

Then spent another $50,000,000 for the first year of service.  Staffing and equipment.

You would have better luck in the US, or anywhere for that matter, for a startup internet company.

The FCC should be able to supply you with the necessary information and in Australia the ABT.
