Can radioactivity be beneficial to the human species?

  1. Radioactive isotope if Iodine is used by  doctors to  diagnose  thyroid gland (goitre) disorders.

    RAdioactive  isotopes are actually injected into body  and  used for medical purposes.

    I have read that , a  lady had been treated in hongkong and  since she had recieved  such a radioactive therapy... she triggered the  radioactive  alarm  at  the airport.


  2. Radioactivity is used to treat cancer, to kill bacteria and other pathogens on food, and to generate energy.  So sure, there are positive uses.

  3. Radiation is very useful:

    (1) We generate 20% of our electricity from nuclear fission.

    (2) Radionuclides are used to diagnose diseases such as thyroid disorders using radioactive iodine.

    (3) Radionuclides can be used to detect both microscopic breaks in bones, as well as cancer metastasis.

    (4) We can use radionuclides to determine how old something is.

    (5) Gamma radiation is used to sterilize the wrapped plastic instruments used in hospitals, etc.
