Question:

Radovan Karadzic - will he go to the Hague?

Radovan Karadzic was arrested Monday in Belgrade. The arrest was apparently made by Serbian police, and Karadzic's lawyer says it was an "illegal" arrest.

Serbia had been claiming for more than a decade that his whereabouts were unknown. It tuirns out he was living quite normally in a suburb of the Serbian capital - which is what the UN has been saying all along.

Realize that Karadzic is easily-recognizable and really never tried to hide. About 5 years ago there was a Serbian nationalist poster campaign that proclaimed "EVERY SERB IS RADOVAN". We wondered if that meant every Serb had a really bad haircut.

Has Serbia made enough progress away from the Milosevic era that Karadzic will go to the Hague, or will "nationalists" again help a wanted war criminal evade justice?

  1. Well, the fact that Serbia arrested Karadzic is a fact enough to prove its decision to settle one of the most difficult issues of its troubled past. I say BRAVO to Serbian Government for having the guts to finally do that. It took them long time but they did it in the end. But on the other hand, we have to remember that the war we are talking about had several sides. Could you say about those other sides that they did anything (unlike Serbs) to brake up with their nationalism thrives and wartime legacies. I guess nope, none of them did... and please don't tell me that others (such as Croats and Albanians don't have many things on their conscience)... no war is a black & white story unless it is made in Hollywood.

I am very proud at Serbia today because it showed it is self conscious and capable enough to face its past delusions. Cheers to that name!

  2. He will go wherever is decided by the authorities.

As for the campaign, while you wondered if every Serb had a really bad haircut, we wondered if every US&EU soldier, special force etc. had such poor skills. Because they couldn't find nor catch him for more than 13 yrs. The incompetent lot.

  3. This move is a great progress it self
