Radwanska’s season ends with stress fracture
Agnieszka Radwanska’s season is over, with the world No. 11 forced to miss the remainder of 2010’s tournaments due to a stress fracture in her foot.
The injury has also placed the Pole’s participation in January’s Australian Open in doubt.
Radwanska revealed she was suffering from the injury following her first-round loss at the China Open. Last-year’s runner up blew a one set lead against Germany’s Angelique Kerber to eventually lose the match 7-5, 6-7(3), 5-7.
The consistent 21-year-old’s withdrawal from the year’s remaining tournaments means that for the second straight year, she has failed to add a WTA Tour title to the four she accumulated in 2007 and 2008.
Her best result of the year came in the lead-up to the US Open, when she reached the final in San Diego, only to lose to Svetlana Kuznetsova in three sets.
Radwanska could not replicate that form at the US Open, however, losing to 61st ranked Shuai Peng in the second round; a result that meant her fourth round finish at Wimbledon (lost to Na Li) was to be her best result at a Grand Slam in 2010.
The foot injury also means that after finishing the season in the top-10 for the past two years (ranked as the world No. 10 on both occasions) Radwanska is this year likely to end the season ranked outside that elite group.
