  1. the nimrod was first a civilian jetliner called the comet, just check on the web for boac, the company flew these with catastrophic consequences, suffered from metal fatigue, raf did modify them but still they are over 34 years old

  2. Nimrod can't be grounded because we have nothing to replace them.

Several years ago the government had the choice of the buying the the American AWACS based on the Boeing 707 or an updated Nimrod, they choose the Nimrod which was a disaster and never made it into production, what they should have done was created a mixed fleet of new AWACS and refurbished Nimrods.

Once again the government got it wrong and others are paying the price.

  3. "why I no can you give me a reasnoable reason" ??? your words.

  4. Kenneth d - the 'Early Nimrod' you seem to be referring to was the Shackleton ( or affectionately known as 50 thousand loose rivets flying in close formation), which was indeed developed from the Lancaster.

The RAF Nimrod was developed from the Comet and NEVER has piston engines OR Propellers.

  5. the early Nimrod was based on the Lancaster still with Mk X Merlins, but as needs moved on the later Nimrod was based on the Comet not used by airlines for over 50yrs it had an inherent fault in the window design, mainly airframe fracture @ the window corners leading to explosive decompression Dehaverland never cured the problem, the remaining flying comets r now Nimrods draw your own conclusion?

  6. Why ground them? They have proved themselves as hardworking and reliable aircraft. They may have evolved from a design which was initially faulty, but subsequently, they have been transformed into excellent machines, very versatile and successful over a long period of time. Comet stands vindicated.

  7. Why ground them? All the bugs and design flaws were engineered out of them decades ago. And they are ideally suited for the task that they do.

  8. Not an engineer or pilot so i don't know but coroner has said they should be due to ongoing technical problems with them.

  9. -kenneth d - De Havilland DID fix the problem on the early comets. Since the Comet was the worlds first pressurised passenger aircraft the was little experience with the materials and engineering required for the job. During each flight the cabin was pressurised causing the aircraft to become stressed. Since sharp corners are stress concentrations and all the original Comets all had square windows the materials around those points would fail. This failure would lead to decompression of the aircraft (That is why modern day aircraft windows are not perfect squares/rectangles).

De Havilland rectified this problem and inserted circular windows on its fleet, as seen on the modern day Nimrod.

-In response to your question, the RAF's Nimrod fleet is an aging aircraft. However there is little money spare to go towards an entirely new aircraft. Only upgrades can currently be made. The RAF have some of the most stringent safety regulations when it come to flying that far surpass civilian aviation. If they say its fit to fly, then it is!

    - Unfortunately aircraft will always continue to crash from time to time. The mistakes are what allow Aero Engineers to learn.
