Rafa Benitez blames former owners for Liverpool demise
Inter Milan boss Rafa Benitez launched a scathing attack on Liverpool’s former owners and on Christian Purslow, the current managing director.
Benitez reacted to comments by Tom Hicks earlier in the week when the American stated that Benitez and his poor transfers in the market were to blame for Liverpool’s poor form this and last season.
However, the former Liverpool manager believes the blame lies with former owners Hicks, George Gillett and managing director Purslow.
According to Benitez, Purslow who became managing director of Liverpool last year constantly interfered with his running of the club.
"At the beginning, they changed the managing director who was talking with some players, and they changed everything that we were doing in the past”, said Benitez.
“The managing director is involved in all the decisions: new lawyer, new chief of press, new manager, nine new players, new medical staff and new fitness coaches. They changed everything,” added Benitez.
Benitez reminded Hicks that he finished second in the league, won the Champions League and brought players like Fernando Torres to the club, before the board started to interfere last season.
Benitez continued, “After 86 points and finishing second in the league, what changed? The Americans, they chose a new managing director and everything changed.”
Benitez revealed that he had no sympathy for Hicks or Gillett and their problems.
The former Liverpool manager hoped that the new owner John Henry could turn the club’s fortunes around after a disastrous start to the season.
"The only thing I can say is that I'm sorry for the fans," said Benitez.
Liverpool have only managed to win one game so far this season and new manager Roy Hodgson is already under severe pressure.
The club have picked up six points and are second from bottom in the Premier League.
Benitez believes that the former owners and Purslow should be blamed for the situation.
