Rafa Benitez to raid Liverpool with swoop for Mascherano and Kuyt
Former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez is set to take advantage of the precarious financial position at Anfield by dangling a £33m carrot for two of their most influential players, Argentina captain Javier Mascherano and Dutch striker Dirk Kuyt , to join his new club Inter Milan.
The European champions, who had their former coach Jose Mourinho leave for Real Madrid, have finalized an agreement for Rafa Benitez to be their next manager and will present him at the San Siro as soon as the Spaniard returns from his much deserved holiday following an unsuccessful season with Liverpool. Benitez's three-year contract at the San Siro is reported to be worth £65,000 a week - less than half of what Inter paid Mourinho.
Kuyt was full of praise for his former coach, and this increasingly looking like a come and get me plea to the man that signed him from Feynenoord. Kuyt said: “I don’t know for sure who is going to be in charge at Inter, but Benitez is a fantastic coach and would be a great choice for them.
“Working with him is perfect and I am grateful for all he did for me. I was delighted when he asked me to join him at Liverpool, and while we were together, he gave me a lot of good suggestions about how I could improve my game.”
Mascherano has also been talking about the prospect of a reunion with his former boss. He said: "Me with him? I don't know about my future, but I spent great years with Benitez. My football is his football."
