Rafael Benitez may add to Inter Milan's squad in January
Inter Milan manager Rafael Benitez has said that the injury situation at the club has limited his options, adding that he could make new signings in the January transfer window.
Benitez spoke to Sky Sport Italia after his team's 1–0 victory over Cagliari in the Serie A on Sunday, 17 October, a game in which youngsters Jonathan Biabiany and Philippe Coutinho formed part
of the starting eleven.
The only goal of the quiet game came from Samuel Eto'o, who has 11 goals in 10 appearances this season, but Benitez says his team is not dependent on the Cameroonian striker.
"We are not dependent on Eto'o, when I have everyone back we will have more alternatives and styles of play," said the Spaniard, who is awaiting the return of Argentinian duo Esteban Cambiasso and Diego
Milito, who usually partners Eto'o in attack.
Benitez also said that the shortage of available players at Inter could cause him to make some signings in the next transfer window.
"We need to analyse two or three situations with director Marco Branca. I think we need to buy new players in January so we can stay sharp right until the end of the season."
Inter have been linked with Barcelona star Lionel Messi, but it's unlikely that the defending Serie A champions will make what would be an audacious move for the striker in January.
Tottenham up next
Benitez' team are third in the league with 14 points from seven games. On Wednesday, 20 October, a tough test await Inter in the Champions League, as the team travel to London's White Hart Lane to face
Tottenham in Group A.
"All of Cagliari's chances came from our mistakes," said Benitez, who will hope to see a more solid defensive performance against a team he knows well from his time at Liverpool. "It will be a difficult
encounter, as Spurs are a strong and fast side."
