Rafael Benitez may boost Inter Milan squad in January
Inter Milan manager Rafael Benitez has claimed that he may have to dip into the transfer market in January to boost the strength of his squad.
Benitez’ men struggled to a narrow win 1-0 over Cagliari on Sunday (17 October), with Samuel Eto’o taking his tally for the season to 11 in ten games across all competitions.
Despite the fact that Inter are now sitting joint-top of the Serie A standings alongside city rivals AC Milan, Benitez conceded that he may have to increase his options if the champions are to successfully defend their title.
The former Liverpool manager told Sky Sport Italia that: "We need to analyse two or three situations with director Marco Branca. I think we need to buy new players in January so we can stay sharp right until the end of the season."
Despite Eto’o being by far their leading goalscorer, Benitez claimed that the Italian giants were not over-reliant on the Cameroonian to be the difference-maker in every match and were having to contend with injuries to key players.
'We will have more options when injured players return'
He said that: "It was an important win while we await the return of many injured players. We are not dependent on Eto'o, when I have everyone back we will have more alternatives and styles of play."
Benitez will now turn his attentions towards the crunch UEFA Champions League group stage match with Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday. Spurs are leading the way in the group alongside Inter and, with Benitez well aware of the threat posed by Harry Redknapp’s
men after facing them several times with Liverpool, will be keen to cut out the defensive frailties which led to Cagliari creating several chances.
He said that: "All of Cagliari's chances came from our mistakes. It will be a difficult encounter, as Spurs are a strong and fast side.”
