Rafael Benitez sacked by http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Inter-c39567 Milan
Serie A club Inter Milan have confirmed that they have sacked Rafael Benitez, just over six months after appointing the Spaniard as manager.
Below is the full text of the announcement on Inter’s official website:
“F.C. Internazionale and Rafael Benitez wish to convey that, together and with mutual satisfaction, they have reached an agreement for the early cancellation of their working partnership.
“F.C. Internazionale would like to thank Rafael Benitez for his work in charge of the team, which he guided to success in the Italian League Super Cup and in the FIFA Club World Cup.
“Rafael Benitez would like to thank F.C. Internazionale for the important professional experience and for the victories achieved together.”
Benitez’s sacking came less than a week after the club won the FIFA Club World Cup.
Prior to being appointed coach of Inter Milan, Benitez served for six years as manager of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809. Three days after leaving Liverpool in June 2010, Benitez joined Inter Milan, replacing Jose Mourinho, who had moved to Real
Madrid after leading the Nerazzurri to their historic Treble in the 2009-10 season. Benitez was due to remain at the San Siro until 2012.
The 50-year-old has a commendable coaching record. During the time Benitez was coach of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Valencia-c40863, the club won two Spanish La Liga titles and a UEFA Cup during his time at Valencia. Liverpool under Benitez won the 2005 UEFA
Champions League. After taking over as coach of Inter, he helped the club win the Italian Super Cup.
However, Inter then lost the 2010 UEFA Super Cup, and after a series of below-par performances, slumped to sixth place on the Serie A table by December – 13 points behind table leaders and city rivals AC Milan. Although Benitez’s
position was under scrutiny by this time, he did lead Inter to victory in the 2010 FIFA Club World Cup.
It was after this victory, however, that Benitez was truly in trouble with the management of Inter Milan. After winning the FIFA Club World Cup, Benitez publicly stated that Inter Milan needed to invest in new players in
the January transfer window, or else he would have to leave. This statement did not please club president Massimo Moratti, who thought Benitez’s comments “were not suitable for the situation”. After much public speculation regarding whether or not the coach’s
job was indeed now under threat, Benitez’s agent finally confirmed that he and the management of Inter Milan were in talks about Benitez’s future at the club.
On Thursday, less than a week after Inter’s FIFA Club World Cup victory, a statement on the club’s official website announced that Inter Milan and Benitez had decided to part ways “by mutual agreement.”
Inter Milan have now appointed 41-year-old former AC Milan boss Leonardo as Benitez’s successor.
