Rafael Benitez takes a swipe at Liverpool owners, former boss still unhappy - Part 1
Former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has launched a scathing attack against Anfield’s men in suits that own Red’s Merseyside, saying that they “understood nothing about football”.
In a recent press release, the 50-year-old Spaniard, who had spent 6 years managing Liverpool, stated that Liverpool's top brass was clueless of how to react in these troubled times for the club.
After a disappointing last season where Liverpool went down to the 7th position in the English Premier League, rumours were rife that Rafa might say quits from Anfield. However, the events that unfolded were unbelievable to say the least as Manchester
United’s manager Sir Alex Ferguson had spent just over two decades and it was expected that Rafa would be the man who will show resistance against him.
Before the 2009/10 season, Rafa had guided Liverpool to the second position in the League just behind the Red Devils who won the league title that year. The following season however saw the club having the worst luck one could possibly have had.
It seemed that lady luck had entirely forgotten her visit to the Merseyside as the Reds faced trouble in the form of an own goal scoring beach ball, freak and repetitive injuries, bizarre accidents and last but not least, major financial troubles.
In the end, Liverpool had to fight tooth and nail to achieve the 7th position on the table. But what seemed on paper was not the end of the story as deep conflicts within the club were developing and players looked for ways to escape, most of
them abandoning Kop as a possible option.
Players from the club now threatened that if fresh and talented blood was not brought into the club, they would leave. Others stated that they could no longer work with Benitez as they had lost fate, so it became a situation of just one choice.
With the summers starting, the financial worries at the club grew as Anfield sat idle while other clubs enjoyed the reaping from the previous season. Eventually, it became clear that Rafa was not going to be the Samaritan for the Merseyside and therefore
he had to leave.
Hours before he was sacked, Rafa gave an official statement that he was leaving the club after which officials from the club announced that he had been canned and the management position was vacant.
They stated that football legend Kenny Dalglish, the current ambassador of the club, was appointed to search for a suitable manager. In the end, Dalglish wanted the job for himself but failed to make the cut.
In the end, Roy Hodgson, the Fulham manager was appointed to manage the club and all through this time, Benitez refrained from commenting on the situation. Though Benitez was canned, he immediately hit the jack pot as he was offered a job from last seasons’
Champions League winning team Inter Milan.
Rafa of course was happy as ever of making a club shift from the biggest disappointment last season to the Champions of Europe. From San Siro, Jose Mourinho, who was managing the Nerazzurri back then, transferred himself to Bernabeu to manage Real Madrid.
Benitez stabilized himself a bit at San Siro before taking hits at his former club. This was expected as Benitez had been in the midst of quarrels with the American owners of the club, Tom Hicks and George Gillett for the past two years.
