Rafael Benitez to swoop for Mascherano and Tévez
New Inter Milan manager Rafael Benitez will attempt to bring Argentina captain Javier Mascherano and compatriot Carlos Tévez to the San Siro.
The former Liverpool manager was appointed yesterday on a two-year deal, and wants Mascherano to follow him to Inter.
Mascherano was close to making a move to Barcelona last summer, and since he has failed to sign an extension to his contract, looks likely to move away from Anfield.
The 26-year-old was brought to Liverpool by Benitez in 2007 for £18.6million, and the defensive midfielder has spoken of his desires to leave Liverpool.
Benitez has the hard task of following José Mourniho’s treble-winning feat, but he will be handed an £80million transfer kitty this summer to build his own team.
Mascherano’s Argentina teammate Tévez is also wanted by Benitez. The Spaniard tried to sign the former Manchester United star before he moved down the road to Manchester City, and it is believed he will make another move for the striker.
Tévez moved to Man City for £25.5million in 2009, and scored 23 goals in 35 appearances last season. The prospect of playing in the Champions League could tempt Tévez to make the move to the San Siro, as Man City lost out to Tottenham on fourth spot, missing out on the chance to play in next season’s Champions League.
