Rafael Marquez knocks out Eric Aiken in first round – Boxing News
Rafael Marquez, the former WBC Silver super bantamweight champion, made an impressive comeback and collected a first-round technical knockout win over Eric Aiken, the former IBF featherweight champion, in a 10-round bout held on May 5, 2012.
The duo co-headlined the event and the ring for the bout was set up at Auditorio Municipal situated in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. The event was headlined by the WBA female super bantamweight championship bout between Jackie Nava and Diana Ayala and
the whole Saturday night extravaganza was promoted by Fernando Beltran of Promociones Zanfer.
Rafael, 37, had the odds in his favour even before the bout started. The veteran Mexican proud boasted 40 wins in his illustrious 47-bout career and is known as a knockout specialist. Being one of the best pound-for-pound brawlers in Mexico, Marquez has
nailed a huge 36 of his opponents by sheer knockout.
Currently ranked as ninth in the world rankings, Rafael, was coming from a close unanimous decision loss to Japanese sensation Toshiaki Nishioka, a bout in which he lost the chance to grab the WBC super bantamweight gold.
As far as the significant technical statistics are concerned, Rafael already had the fight in his hands and with the ring of the first bell, his actions and the way he attacked Eric was evident of the fact that he will annihilate his opponent in mere seconds.
Eric, 32, was entering in his 27th career bout and unfortunately was going through a pretty tough time of his career. He has emerged victorious in 16 bouts and collected 12 of those wins by knocking the opponent out cold.
Aiken, widely known as ‘The Mighty Mouse’, was coming from a devastating six-bout loss scenario. He has collected four losses, one draw and one no contest decision in his last six bouts. Amidst such hopeless situation there was not much to be expected from
Aiken in fact he was thrown into a one-sided bout with Rafael ready to lash out his fists just to sharpen them.
The bout kicked off and Rafael moved forward with full force connecting his powerful punches to Aiken’s face and body. The power of the jabs was so intense that after the passage of just two minutes and 26 seconds Aiken got flattened on the ring floor, permanently.
The referee took a keen look at Eric and finally called off the bout in favour of Rafael who, after the intimidating win, successfully collected his 41st career win. Eric, on the other hand, has collected his ninth career loss, fourth by knockout and unfortunately
the fourth in last five bouts.
