Rafael Marquez scheduled to take on Wilfredo Vazquez Junior in a 12-round title bout - Boxing News
Rafael Marquez, the former WBC Silver super bantamweight champion, is scheduled to take on Wilfredo Vazquez Junior, the former WBO super bantamweight champion, in a 12-round bout which will be held on August 4, 2012 and will have the vacant WBO International
super bantamweight title up for grabs.
The duo will headline the pay-per-view organised and promoted by Ivan Rivera of Puerto Rico Best Boxing. The ring for the bout will be set up at Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, Bayamon, Puerto Rico.
The night will be co-headlined by the WBO super featherweight title eliminator bout between Roman Martinez and Miguel Beltran Junior. The duo recently met at a media gathering and shared their thoughts regarding the bout.
Rafael, 37, has been in a total of 48 bouts. The veteran pugilist has won 41 bouts with 37 of them coming via knockouts. Marquez is widely known as the best knockout specialist in the whole of featherweight division.
Marquez has won almost all the apex divisional titles and proudly resides at World Boxing Organisation’s 10th rank. While sharing his thoughts about the engagement with Wilfredo, Rafael stated, “I had been training for a month and a half and I come to Puerto
Rico for a war. Puerto Ricans know who I am and know that I come to fight.”
His Saturday night opponent, Vazquez is also a top-notch pugilist who resides at WBO’s 11th rank just after Marquez. The Puerto Rican proud has been in a total of 24 bouts and is entering the ring with odds heavily against him.
The 28-year-old has collected 18 of his 21 wins by knocking the opponent out cold and is also a decent knockout pounder but when compared to Rafael, stands no chance at all. Wilfredo recently collided with Nonito Donaire for the vacant WBO super bantamweight
gold but lost the bout via split decision.
During the media interaction, Vazquez remarked that he is not underestimating Rafael at all and stated, “I know you and I’m training for a big fight. I don’t underestimate you for your age as a lot of people do. I had two ways to continue my career. The
long way to make two or three fights and then go for a title or fight against Marquez, a veteran or the short way. I choose the short way and I am going to fight Marquez.”
The bout will be a classic one as both men secure respectable places in the division. Moreover, the presence of a vacant title as the purse will definitely motivate the duo to put forth an explosive show.
