Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer advance to the round of 16 – Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell 2012
Rafael Nadal beats Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-1, 6-2
Defending champion, Rafael Nadal, continued his supreme form on clay courts, crushing Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 in the second round at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell in Spain on Wednesday.
The Spaniard took just an hour and 21 minutes to breeze past his countryman.
Nadal completely dominated the first set, as he allowed Garcia-Lopez to win only one game and broke him thrice to seal it 6-1.
The top seed, Nadal, continued to dictate the proceedings in the second set, grabbing first four games to move ahead 4-0. Garcia-Lopez succeeded in opening his account to reduce the trail to 1-4 but Nadal struck once again in the
eighth game, capturing it 6-2.
The Spaniard looked in good shape, as he snatched a total of 27 of the 38 serve and 34 of the 60 return points in the match.
Nadal said, "It went better than I thought, I played a good match. I made few errors, I felt good on my backhand for virtually the whole time and I was solid across the board."
The 10-time Grand Slam winner will play Robert Farah of Colombia in the third round.
David Ferrer defeats Filip Krajinovic 6-0, 6-3
Joining Nadal in the last 16, David Ferrer demolished Filip Krajinovic of Serbia in straight sets 6-0, 6-3 in the second round. The third seed ousted his opponent in just 58 minutes.
Ferrer was flawless in the opener, as he claimed three breakthroughs and did not lose even a single game to win it 6-0.
The second set saw some competition, as Ferrer hit a blow in the fourth game to go up 3-1 but the Serbian clinched next two and equalised the score at 3-3. However, Ferrer won three successive games after that, closing it 6-3.
The Spaniard pounded three aces and snatched 21 of the 27 points on the first serves, converting all the five break chances he created in the match.
Talking to the reporters in the post match press conference, Ferrer said, “I played pretty well, it was a relatively comfortable start. The second set was not as good as the first, but I kept my energy and speed. I had shoulder
problems but I had treatment here on Friday. But I still didn’t know last Sunday if I could play. I did recover but I still need to rest to avoid problems.”
Ranked sixth in the world, Ferrer will face compatriot, Albert Montanes, in the round of 16.
