The only man to have ever beaten Rafael Nadal, Robin Soderling, consistently improved as the year progressed. For a short amount of time, he even held the Number 4 position; even though he ended the year at 5. The situation
seems ideal for Soderling; he stands to gain a lot of points in 2011 and moving up the rankings is a real possibility for the man.
All these men show great promise and will certainly be making 2011 a very entertaining and happening year for tennis. However, could it be that the horse to back is in fact the current Number 4, Andy Murray? Maybe the success
of the British team at the Ashes is in some way a premonition of the British Tennis Players repeat performance on the Australian soil.
Anybody who follows the sport would agree with us when we say that Andy Murray is probably the best player that has not won a major title...yet!
The player has an arsenal of wins at the Masters, 500 and 250 levels, but has to end his Grand Slam drought. Surely, he is a great player, but in order to make this official the man needs to add a major title to his credentials
and fast. In 2011, Melbourne seems to be his best bet at the title and a loss there may very well mean that the tennis star may never claim one at all. It can be said that the 2011 Australian Open may prove to be the make or break for Murray. He has been close
to snatching the title before but close is not good enough anymore. The pressure is on!
The Scot has revealed that he has started preparing for the 2011 season and will be working harder than ever this winter to make sure he is in top form. The major challenge for the man is going to be keeping up his performance
the entire season. The Scottish tennis star has been seen over the years to start the season with great energy and motivation but as the season proceeds, the more he plays the more he wears down and the quality of his game suffers greatly.
However, is Andy ready to snatch all the major titles and the Number 1 spot with it? Maybe not! The French, Wimbledon and US Open all have numerous court specialists that Murray will have to go head to head with. This leaves
the Australian Open as the only event where Andy is comfortable enough to score a win. The outdoor hard courts are where he excels, his home turf. It remains to be seen whether his loss in 2010 to Roger Federer at the same event and the absence of a coach
will act against him this coming season.
This year there were many moments that fans would not have wanted to miss; Nadal’s matches with Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic and of course the ATP Tour Final against Roger Federer being among them. The coming year seems
to be just as exciting if not more so. Both Nadal and Federer have a lot riding on this season. If Federer were to lose the Australian Open, it would be the first time since 2003 that he has been without a title (looking at the first 52 weeks of the ATP calendar
year).
Whatever the results, at the end of the 2011 season may be; the year is all set to be the most exciting one yet. The new season that starts in under a month, will undoubtedly be the most competitive and fierce in the history
of the game. All we have to say is bring it on...Game.Set.Match!
