Rafael Nadal Beat David Ferror To Claim Fifth Rome Masters
Brilliant Rafael Nadal beat fellow Spaniard David Ferror in a rainy final in Rome. He braved two rain delays to beat Ferror 7-5, 6-2 to claim his fifth Rome Masters. He has also equaled 17 Masters Titles record held by Andre Aggasi of US. Nadal has equaled Aggasi’s record of 17 Masters Titles at the age of 23 in contrast to Aggasi who achieved this feat at 34. World number one Rogers Federer has won 16 Masters Titles.
At the beginning Ferrer played well to save five break points The match was poised at 4-4, but after a rain break of about an hour Nadal increased the pressure and broke Ferror’s serve to take the first set 7-5. Rain again halted play again when Nadal was 2-1 up in the second set and the match was then suspended again for 1 hour, 45 minutes but after the rain Nadal emerged more focused and played fabulously to take the second set 6-2. Nadal hit 24 winners to Ferrer's 15, he also made fewer unforced errors than David Ferrer.
"It's important to have the motivation to want to keep improving. That's the main thing," Nadal said afterwards. "That's how it's been all my career, all my life, and I still do it. I love to play tennis. I love the competition."
Nadal celebrated his victory by raising his hands and then went to Ferror to shake hands with him. He came to final after a tough semifinal against Ernest Gulbis. This is his second title after winning Monte Carlo Masters two weeks back, which came after almost a year of title drought. Nadal has won all ten matches he has played on clay this season. Nadal’s eyes are now set on French Open which will start later this month, 23 May to be exact.
It was not Ferrer’s day as he did not play well enough may be because of rain delays "Maybe the court was slower and I had problems to (end) the points," Ferrer said. "Of course Rafael had good chances in the important moments. It's difficult against him but I'm happy with my game."
Court was slippery and wet because of rain and strong winds, which made playing conditions difficult. Sizeable crowd of around 10,000 witnessed Nadal’s victory.
