Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic to play at Real Madrid’s Stadium – Tennis News
World’s top two players, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, will play a tennis match at Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in July this year.
Djokovic and Nadal will try to set a world record for the biggest attendance at a tennis match in the history of the sport.
The event will be held on the 14th of July, in between the Wimbledon Championships and London Olympics, in a stadium which has a capacity of just over 80,000. Realmadrid Foundation and Rafa Nadal Foundation are organizing
this tennis match to raise funds for child and teenage poverty.
A statement on Real Madrid’s website said, "The pitch at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium will turn into a tennis court on 14 July for a charity match between Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic. It will be organized by the Realmadrid Foundation
and the Rafa Nadal Foundation, hoping to gather a record 80,000 crowd and collect proceeds for projects developed by both foundations."
Even if the stadium get’s half filled, it will break the current record of 35, 681 spectators, who came for an exhibition match between Serena Williams and Kim Clijsters in Brussels, Belgium on 8th July 2010.
That match had over taken the previous, long standing, record of 30,472 fans, which was made during the famous “Battle of the Sexes” match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs at the Houston Astrodome in 1973.
Djokovic and Nadal have completely dominated the ATP World Tour since 2011, giving birth to one of the biggest rivalries in the history of the sport. They have faced each other in the last three Grand Slam finals. These two set
a new record for playing in the longest title match at a Major, when they contested the Australian Open final earlier this year.
Nadal, who is Spain’s top tennis player, is a big fan of Real Madrid and even attend their matches when his schedule allows. Likewise, Djokovic was seen once wearing a Real Madrid shirt when he came out to the court for a tennis
match at the Mutua Madrid Open, also being the guest of honour at the club’s facilities.
