Rafael Nadal cancels the charity match with Novak Djokovic – Tennis News
Knee injury to the former world number one, Rafael Nadal, has left the fans dejected who bought tickets for a charity match that was scheduled to be contested at Santiago Bernabeu stadium on July 14. The Spaniard is suffering from
the knee injury and has already apologized to all the fans. They were waiting to witness an epic thriller between the Top-2 ranked players in the world.
World number one, Novak Djokovic, was his opponent in the charity match. It was expected to be an entertaining for the tennis fanatics in at Madrid in a stadium that can accommodate up to 85,000 people. However, injury to the local
tennis hero has ruined the plans of majority of the fans but the recovery to Nadal is must especially before the start of the Olympics campaign in the last week of July.
An apology from Nadal was enough to calm the fans. He stated, “I wish to apologise to all, especially the supporters who had already purchased tickets for this good cause.” He further added, “Doctors have been examining my knee
and say I suffer from tendonitis on the patellar ligament and that I must rest for 15 days, which prevents me from playing against Novak Djokovic as planned and announced.”
Nadal will begin his gold medal defence at London Olympics and it is his prime goal to retain the medal and become the only player in the history of the world to perform such a miracle. He won the gold medal in the previous edition
of Olympics at Beijing in 2008. So, it will be interesting to see if the 26-year-old Spaniard is able to recover in time and get back to 100% fitness before Olympics.
Talking about his meeting with a doctor, he said, “I saw the doctors on Monday and began the recovery process to be fit to represent Spain in the London Olympics. We will try to look for a new date for the event. Once again, thanks
to all.”
Seven-time French Open Champion has left the fans furious at his decision but the circumstances and the apology of the highest order will soothe their nerves for sure.
