Rafael Nadal comments on his first career-threatening injury – Tennis News
Former world number one, Rafael Nadal, will be back in action on the 28th of December, 2013 at the hard courts of Abu Dhabi. He will contest in the Mubadala Tennis Championships and aims to begin with an unbeaten run
at the tournament that features the likes of the reigning world number one, Novak Djokovic, and the US Open Champion, Andy Murray, as well.
He was away on an injury layoff for the past six months and missed out some major tournaments like London Olympics, US Open and the ATP World Tour Finals in the process. However, the time was well served as the 26-year-old Spaniard
recovered from the sore knee; enjoyed the time with his family and friends.
In the meantime, the Spaniard was interviewed about the accomplishments in his career and some nightmares that will haunt him for a long period of time. One of the queries were about the first ever injury that bothered the left-handed
superhero to an extent that it seemed to threaten his career.
Nadal replied to the reporter of Aspetar, a sports medical magazine, “I remember it was a shoulder lesion a few years ago. There was not such professionalism like we have now and they didn’t know the evolution of the lesion. Initially
I was recommended to see the doctor of the Spanish Tennis Federation, but since my uncle was playing with the Barcelona FC football team at the time, he took me to see the doctor of the football club. This doctor prescribed anti-inflammatory. I then went to
see the doctor of the Spanish Tennis Federation who prescribed some exercises which were aimed at preventing future injuries. These were very effective.”
One of the toughest competitors of the era left us at the second round of the Wimbledon Championships. The Czech underdog, Lukas Rosol, hammered the injury-stricken Nadal in a gruelling five-setter. It was a terrible loss and the
beginning of a new six-month reign, featuring a rehabilitation of the knee-injury that always looked threatening considering the game style of the Spaniard.
The 11-time Grand Slam Champion has fought with the injuries throughout his career. Most critics believe that it was a necessary break for Nadal after all the wear and tear that took the toll on his knee. Let’s hope, it is the
case because no one wants the guru of tennis to have an immature closure to a stupendous career.
