Rafael Nadal crushes David Ferrer to capture the title – Abierto Mexicano Telcel 2013
In an all-Spanish affair, second seeded Rafael Nadal dethroned his top ranked compatriot, David Ferrer, with a bagel at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel 2013 on Saturday. He jolted down a 6-0, 6-2 victory against the three-time defending champion to capture the
crown at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 5000 series event held in Acapulco, Mexico.
The former world number one, Nadal ruled throughout the clash at the Fairmont Acapulco Princess. He reeled off eight games in a row before his fellow citizen could come on the score board. After pocketing this victory in just above an hour, Nadal improved
to 17-4 in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series against the veteran.
The Spanish star, Nadal, was quoted in a courtside interview after lifting his 38th clay court trophy:
"This was a great week for me and today I played exceptionally well, I dominated the game against the world No. 4 and couldn't be happier, especially when I think where I am coming from. Perhaps the conditions were in my favour but I feel it was maybe one
of the best matches of my career."
Nadal, who has recently returned from a seven month layoff due to an injury, made a thunderous entry at this tournament. He went on a six-game killing spree and bagged a bagel.
The 11-time Grand Slam champion, Nadal kept momentum rolling in the proceeding set. He got the critical break in the opening game and jumped to a 2-0 lead before Ferrer showed his presence in this battle. The Mallorcan maintained his intensity and capitalised
on another break opportunity, eventually clinched the set with a 6-2 score line.
Ranked fourth in the Emirates ATP World Tour Rankings, Ferrer displayed dismal performance in this much awaited final. He defended his titles in the previous two tournaments he played but dropped to 20-16 in ATP tour finals after this loss.
The Spanish number one reflected about his loss at this tournament:
“I wish I could have played a better match but I never found my rhythm. You have good days and bad days. Rafa played really well and I couldn't do much, and never had any chance [but] I leave with a positive feeling.”
The 26-year-old will take on Juan Martin Del Potro in an exhibition match on Monday before entering the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, the first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event of the season.
