Rafael Nadal dislikes the idea of three-setter Olympics rule – Tennis News
World number two, Rafael Nadal, is not happy with the fact that the Olympics tournament is played on a three-set basis instead of five. It is ranked greater than the Grand Slam Championships but the rules are just like a normal
tournament. It is definitely not in the best interest of players and the hype is lost if a big guns fails to win one of the first two sets.
Nadal stated that playing three set matches at a fast court of Wimbledon was a bad idea by the officials and it will bring a lot of major upsets that might leave the crowd dejected and probably lower the overall excitement of the
big tournament like Olympics.
He commented, “That's makes the tournament a little bit crazier. Everybody can win even more than on hard or clay, because playing best of three sets; the match can be decided in just a few points. So that's probably the negative
thing. In every match, you are at the limit. I don't say it's a 'crazy idea'. But it is a little bit more difficult to predict what's going to happen."
The Spaniard who will enter the field of Wimbledon in the last week of July to defend the Olympics title he won at Beijing, China in 2008. He defeated his compatriot, Marcel Granollers, in the final four years ago to claim the
gold medal. However, he was not the only one talking about the bad decision made by Olympics officials. Former world number one, Lleyton Hewitt, was furious to have not been awarded a wildcard for the Olympics in doubles category. The 31-year-old Aussie stated,
“Yeah, I am disappointed. I can't work that out for the life of me. I guess playing as much Davis Cup as you do doesn't count for everything.”
It seems like the final list of players has broken a lot of hearts but given opportunity to some new guns like the British duo of Heather Watson and Laura Robson who caught the eye of the officials as well as tennis fanatics. It
is going to another crazy summers for the tennis fans especially with the inclusion of Olympics in the normal schedule.
