Rafael Nadal downs Marcos Baghdatis in his opening clash at the Mutua Madrid Open
World number one Rafael Nadal eased past Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis 6-1, 6-3 on Wednesday to reach the third round of 2011 ATP Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open in Spain.
Nadal has been in terrific form since the start of this season. The 24-year-old Spaniard is now eyeing his third clay court title in less than a month after his back to back tournament wins in Monte Carlo and Barcelona. In his
opening clash against Baghdatis, Nadal did not face a single break point on his serve and converted the very first match point with a superb forehand winner down the line.
Top-seeded at Madrid Masters made a phenomenal start to the match by breaking the serve in the very first game of the opening set. He created all sorts of problems for his opponent with his excellent on-court movement and converted
his second break chance successfully as well to take the set score lead 1-0.
The second set proved to be completely one sided as the Spaniard wrapped up the match without dropping a game in the set. Nadal dominated the challenger in almost all aspects of the game and required only 1 hour and 4 minutes dispatching
his opponent.
Talking about his match, Nadal said, "It's one of those matches you can win or lose and anything could happen. I will try to play at my top level, aggressively and with more intensity. It's also true that I am coming into the match
in good form and I will try to maintain that. We will see who wins but the winner will take away a lot of confidence for the rest of the tournament I think."
The Spaniard moves on ahead to play Juan Martin Del Potro. The Argentine destroyed Croat tennis pro Marin Cilic in straight sets 6-3, 6-0 to setup a clash with the King of Clay.
