Rafael Nadal eyes world number one spot in 2012 – Tennis News
World number two, Rafael Nadal is all set to take a leap next year and strip the reigning world number one, Novak Djokovic, from that number one spot. Spaniard had six chances to overpower Djokovic in the finales of different tournaments
but he wasn’t tough enough to stop the Serbian in registering a record breaking year.
HE mentioned his fear of injury in 2012 due to a hectic schedule and said, “But if you are not healthy the rest of the things are impossible so I'm always crossing my fingers to stay healthy."
Nadal is all fired up to snatch his former world number spot from the Serbian but he is afraid that the scheduling issue might be a hindrance in his way as he might get injured, playing a lot of tennis. Spaniard was stripped from
his number one spot by the Serbian after winning seven titles. In total, Djokovic won 10 titles this year including three grand slam titles, sparing just one for the Spanish number one to name, Roland Garros French Open.
Spaniard can look at the brighter side of this year’s campaign as he managed to level the record number of wins at French Open with Bjorn Borg, winning six titles at his favourite sporting surface, clay court. An emphatic ending
to the season saw the Spaniard lifting fifth Davis Cup title for his country at his home soil, Seville, Spain.
Mubadala World Tennis Championship is the kick-off exhibition tournament for the New Year that will feature the likes of Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Gael Monfils, David Ferrer and Andy Murray. The tournament will
be a warm-up for the first grand slam of the year, Australian Open, and will be contested at one of the most beautiful parts of the world, Abu Dhabi.
Talking about his New Year revolutions, Nadal said, “For sure you have to set yourself some goals in the short term, but the long term goal is always to keep improving my tennis and try to keep having chances to challenge for the
big titles to compete for the first position in the rankings."
Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer has also shown his class in the recent past winning three titles, Basel, Paris and year-end finale in London, in succession to sign off 2011. It definitely sends a very strong signal to Nadal and Djokovic
that he is back in business.
