Rafael Nadal fighting against time to recover for Olympics – Tennis News
World number three, Rafael Nadal, has unwantedly admitted the fact that he will not be fully fit for the gold medal defence at the upcoming London Olympics, starting in the last week of July. He was injured in the Wimbledon campaign
and the injury was none other than the long lasting chronic knee problem that has created difficulties for the Spaniard since he was 14 years old.
Nadal is also the flag bearer for the Spanish Olympic Squad that will consist of several class acts taking part in the world’s biggest sporting event conducted four-yearly. Last time the event was held at Beijing, China and the
Spanish number one, Nadal, lifted her first singles gold medal after ousting Fernando González of Chile.
However, the arch rival from Serbia, Novak Djokovic, who was just recently dethroned from his number one spot by the legendary tennis ace, Roger Federer, was not too far from the medal. He lost in the semi-final stages to the Spaniard
in a classic three-setter 4-6, 6-1, 4-6. So, it will be interesting to see the performance of the Serb professional who is eager to burst out his anger on losing the number one spot to the Swiss Maestro.
On the other hand, Federer is in his prime run of form and at the age of 30, his willpower to win the gold medal at Wimbledon has turned the game up. It will be an epic battle between the Top-3 players in the world and possibly
the fourth ranked Briton, Andy Murray, who was the finalist at the year’s third Grand Slam Championship, Wimbledon, earlier in July.
Injured Nadal commented on his performance, “I am doing everything possible to recover. After Roland Garros I had a difficult time, but the excitement is at its maximum, I am working as hard as I can and hopefully I will be at
100 per cent. I am the one who is most worried. I hope that things improve and my intention is to arrive in London well prepared and recuperated. It is for this that I work every day. Carrying the flag will the something unforgettable and I hope that Spain
continue on the path of success it has been on for the past few years.”
The trio on the top of the rankings will bring a lot to the tennis fanatics in this busy summer especially at London Olympics. However, the news of the knee injury to the defending champion can leave the fans dejected.
