Rafael Nadal loses to Florian Mayer in 3rd round – Shanghai Rolex Masters 2011
Thursday, 13th October, went out with the biggest upset of Shanghai Rolex Masters 2011. Rafael Nadal, top seed and ranked world No.2, was outgunned, tangled, and outsmarted by the 28-year-old German, Florian Mayer, in
straight sets, 7-6(5), 6-3 in an hour and 47 minutes.
Playing at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena in Shanghai, China Mayer tore the Spaniard apart in a straight sets win. With the two making their walk into the blue court, Spaniard world No.2 had a massive support to disappoint
in the end. Starting off first, Mayer took out the opening game and led the set, 1-0. Covering up the lead Nadal served out his opening serve and levelled up the scores, 1-1.
With the two winning out their respective serves, the two levelled up at 2-2, 3-3 and 4-4 and then at 5-5. Comparatively, the top seed had a better accuracy in serving, however, world No.23 pulled of an amazing 89 percent winner
of his serves.
Also the German had a better return percentage in the first set. Anyhow, with the set continuing, the two served out a game each to tie up in a tiebreaker to decide the first set outcome. Serving out first, the 28-year-old pulled
off the first point, however, the Spaniard top gun did manage to level up next, 1-1.
Mayer, with his super consistency pulled off winning the tiebreaker, 7-5, bagging the tiebreaker 7-6(5) to lead the match 1-0.
With the top seed lacking behind, continued with the second set opener serving out the first game with a triple game point win, 1-0. Levelling up with the winner, Mayer stormed up every time the Spaniard took the lead.
Turning the tables next, Mayer stunned the world No.2 as he broke the left-hander for the first time in the match. Serving out game 6, 3-3, the 23-year-old broke his opponent in game 7, 4-3, and served out game 8 to lead the set
with a comfortable 2 games lead, 5-3.
With just one more game left to jolt the top seed, Mayer surprised the frustrated Spaniard with another breakpoint, game 9, bagging the second set, 6-3, and winning the match in straight sets.
Mayer now goes on into the quarterfinal of the ATP Masters 1000 event to play against another Spaniard, Feliciano Lopez on Friday, 14th October. Lopez upset seeded Tomas Berdych in the third round to secure a berth in
the last eight.
