Rafael Nadal outplays Stanislas Wawrinka to conquer the ATP Masters title – Mutua Madrid Open 2013
King of Clay, Rafael Nadal, has been going superbly on the road to redemption and has claimed yet another ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title in Madrid. The former world number one overwhelmed the likes of Stanislas Wawrinka in the
final of Mutua Madrid Open on Sunday. Nadal hammered the Swiss tennis ace in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, to claim his 55th ATP championship title in an assertive manner.
With a nine-match winning streak against Wawrinka and a formidable record on clay surface, Nadal was rated as the hot favourite for winning the title match on Sunday. The reigning world number five literally had no troubles in
putting aside the bleak resistance from the 28-year-old Swiss and cruised through the two sets en route to victory. It was Nadal’s fifth ATP title victory of the running season after he made his comeback from a long injury layoff. The Spaniard has having a
31-2 winning record this season and is clearly rocketing on his way to reclaim the world number one range yet another time.
"I'm very happy," said Nadal. "I think I played a really good match. I think I played the best match of the whole week today in the final. Being able to play here in Madrid and being able to win in front of all my people, is something
really special."
Wawrinka has been playing exceptionally well in Madrid so far but his skills were no match for the belligerence of the Spaniard. He was clearly outplayed by Nadal in every segment of the game and couldn’t register a single break
point in the entire match.
"I think he started really well," said Wawrinka. "Even if I'm playing my best tennis and [am] completely fresh, it's really, really tough to beat him. It was tough for me. The ball was flying. I didn't find out a way how to play
my game [and] how to be aggressive on the court. He was also dictating the points."
Nadal is now less than 100 points below David Ferrer and has an excellent chance to claim the world number four spot in Rome Masters tournament this week.
