Rafael Nadal pens down three year contract with Gerry Weber Open officials – Tennis News
Spanish number one, Rafael Nadal has signed a three year contract with the officials of Gerry Webber event contested in Halle, Germany. He said, “The Gerry Weber Open is a fantastic tournament. I’m very happy that I may finally
play in Germany and in front of my German fans again.”
Nadal has just played once in this tournament and that was almost six years before in 2005. He will be returning to the arena next year and will take part in the tournament in the hunt his first Halle title. 25-year-old favours
clay courts because he is totally unstoppable on that soil but it is interesting to see that how Spaniard will perform on the grass courts of Halle.
Arch rival of Spain’s tennis ace, former world number one, Roger Federer, will also take part in the event and he will be accompanied by the likes of Tomas Berdych and Gael Monfils. Talking about the great talent at the courts
at the Gerry Weber Open tournament, tournament director, Ralf Weber stated, “In all the conversations I have held with the players, it has been confirmed to me once again that our tournament for them is an important mark in their schedules.”
Spaniard has only won just three titles on grass that includes two Wimbledon grand slam titles and one Wimbledon warm-up tournament title contested in Queen’s club, England. He is the king of clay but has been severely troubled
on the grass court. He faced many difficulties, especially against the world number one, Novak Djokovic, that denied him of six major titles this season mostly at grass courts. The only clay court grand slam tournament was won by the Spaniard at Roland Garros
French Open.
Roger Federer has a life-time contract with the tournament officials and has been crowned champions for the record five times. Berdych is another exciting superstar that will battle it out in order to double his Halle title tally
having won the title in 2007 by overpowering Marcos Baghdatis in the final.
All these players will battle it out in the next year’s tournament for 250 ATP points along with prize money of €750,000. The tournament will be contested at the grass courts of Gerry Weber Stadium in Halle, Germany from 11th
to 17th June, 2012. The hungriest player for the title from the list seems to be Nadal because he hasn’t won it in his entire career.
