Rafael Nadal praises Andy Murray for a successful gold medal conquest – Tennis News
Spain's number one, Rafael Nadal, has stepped out to congratulate his arch rival, Andy Murray, on his monumental achievement at the London Olympics, earlier this month. He has shown a great sportsmanship to put behind all the on-court
rivalry and pass on his heartiest greeting to all three medallists who succeeded in accomplishing their dreams at the All England Lawn Tennis Club, Wimbledon.
Nadal tweeted, “Congrats to @andy_murray, Roger and @delpotrojuan. Especially to Andy, I can imagine the joy of doing at home."
The Spaniard himself was the defending champion of gold medal having won it in the previous edition of Olympics at Beijing in 2008. He was one of the strongest contenders to repeat the heroics and defend the gold at Olympics but
the knee injury kept him out of the competition which was a major disappointment not only for the Spanish superstar but also for all those fanatics who wanted to see the immensely skilful left-handed tennis ace in action.
World number one, Roger Federer, reached the final of the Olympics after battling a four-hour marathon against the Argentine superstar, Juan Martin Del Potro, in the semi-finals. He was the hot favourite to repeat a similar performance
against the fellow finalist, Andy Murray, as he did in the Wimbledon Final, just few weeks earlier, but he failed to clinch a single set and lost the match in despair; failing to complete the Career Gold Slam despite having topped the world ranks at the age
of 30.
It was a brilliant ending for the Scot superstar who is still in the hunt for his maiden Grand Slam title. However, the gold medal in his title rack will definitely boost his morale and help him bring strength to the year’s fourth
Grand Slam Championships, the US Open at New York. It will be ‘a dream come true’ for the fourth ranked Briton to enter the last quarter of the season with a bang.
Nadal who was scheduled to return to the tennis circuit at the Rogers Cup in Montreal, Canada is still suffering from the knee injury and has pulled out of the contest. Silver medallist at London Olympics, Federer, has also withdrawn
from the event due to fatigue. So, the field is open for the Serb superstar, Novak Djokovic, to defend the title but he will face a tough competition from the Scot born gold medallist who is in terrific run of form.
