Rafael Nadal pulls out of the tournament at Brazil – Tennis News
Former world number one, Rafael Nadal, has pulled out of the doubles event in Sao Paulo that was schedule to feature him on the eve of Wednesday. The news has been confirmed by the tournament officials who stated that the overuse
of the knee has caused the 26-year-old Spaniard to withdraw from the doubles event but he will be featuring in the singles category without a doubt.
The 11-time Grand Slam Champion was scheduled to team up with the likes of the Argentine hero, David Nalbandian, to begin their campaign at Sao Paulo. They were given the first round Bye as well. The team of Horcio Zeballos (Argentina)
and Oliver Marach (Austria) were supposed to be their first competitors but now Nadal will not be playing the contest and will only be seen in the singles competition.
Nadal has been cautioned by his doctor to tone down the number of tournaments played in a season. Doctor Angel Luiz Cotorro stated in an interview, “What you have to do in this case is select tournaments properly, enter the circuit
progressively. On clay, movements are less aggressive because of the possibility to skid, which helps the tendon to suffer less. A quick surface is more aggressive than any other because of the abrupt changes in movement, the sudden brakes.”
On withdrawing from the doubles event of the tournament at Brazil, Nadal commented, “I think that the ATP has to think of how to lengthen tennis players' careers. If my knee allows, I will do everything possible to be at my best.
I am a player who plays with a lot passion, a lot of energy. I suppose that does not help the knee.”
After a gap of eight months, the seven-time French Open Champion has returned to the tennis circuit. Therefore, he has been told by the doctors to take it easy before the knee heals up completely. The injury was caused at the second
round of the Wimbledon Championships when Nadal faced a miserable upset at the hands of the Czech underdog, Lukas Rosol. The full recovery date set by the Spaniard is the beginning of the Clay season in April.
