Rafael Nadal signups on Twitter while Novak Djokovic appears on Jay Leno – Tennis News
A little late to the scene, Rafa finally logged onto his Twitter account on Tuesday, 2nd August and within minutes was able to amass a large number of followers. Though he had little to say, Rafa had fans following him
by the thousands.
Rafa opened his account with the tweet, “Good morning! I am already twitterer! I am thrilled to have your support here! You'll have more news from me:) Rafa”
The former world number one tweeted the same message in Spanish as well.
Although excited to finally be on the popular site, Rafa did not have much to say for the big day. Even as his followers hit the 50,000 mark in the first three day, he had only six tweets to show for it. After all one cannot expect
much tweeting from someone who has problems being vocal in real life as well.
First player to welcome Rafa on Twitter was his friend from Argentina, Juan Monaco followed closely by Feliciano Lopez and the NBA professional Pau Gasol.
Getting the hang of a conversation on twitter almost immediately, Rafa tweeted the following two back tweets tagging Monaco, Lopez and Gasol. The tweets read,
“@feliciano_lopez @paugasol delighted to be finally on twitterwith friends like you! Thanks!"
“@picomonaco Thanks for supporting me friend!”
Moments later, Rafa also uploaded his first picture, a photo at a practice session with three of little cousins.
Following a total of seventeen profiles, Rafa chose to follow all four Grand Slams, his sponsors and a select few friends including footballer Cristiano Ronaldo.
Welcoming Rafa to the site, Rafa’s rival for 2011 Novak “Djoker” Djokovic tweeted, “@RafaelNadal Welcome to Twitter. Everybody, follow Rafa and make sure he feels comfortable here :-) Vamos”
This is the least Djokovic could do after snatching away the golden Wimbledon trophy from Rafa earlier in June.
Rafa is the latest to join the world of Twitter following in the footsteps of the notorious Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Bryan Brothers and Andy Murray. The stars have been known to hold extensive conversations about “karaoke”
etc amongst each other while waiting out the rain during the Grand Slams.
While Rafa accustoms himself to the world of Twitter, Djokovic is making new strides in self promotion. Moving from the cover of the popular fashion magazine, Vogue, Djokovic now makes an appearance at the popular talk show, the
Tonight Show with Jay Leno. A natural on television, Djoker talked about his gluten free diet with Leno calling it Styrofoam, jokingly. He also hit the dance floor with six Serbian dancers, though totally out of sync with them.
Djokovic next makes an appearance at the Conan O’Brien show as he enjoys his week at Hollywood.
The two superstars are expected to return to the courts next week as they play at the Montreal Masters.
