Rafael Nadal snubs Western & Southern Open due to knee injury – Tennis News
World number three, Rafael Nadal, is still suffering from a chronic knee injury that has always troubled him ever since he was just 14 years old. For that reason, the Spaniard has opted to snub the Western and Southern Open as
well that was scheduled to start after the completion of the Rogers Cup masters tournament in Toronto, Canada.
It is a major setback for the fans of the Spanish number one. They were waiting to see him in action after being disappointed at the London Olympics and Rogers Cup due to his withdrawals. The wait is getting longer and longer as
people still can’t see the moment when Nadal will be back on courts after being thumped hard by the Czech starlet, Lukas Rosol, in the second round at Wimbledon.
Nadal commented about his withdrawal from the tournament in a following fashion, “I won’t be playing at Cincinnati Open. I am still not ready to play. I have unforgettable moments in 2008. I am continuing with my recup.”
It was the update made on twitter that was later on taken to the most used social networking site Facebook. The 11-time Grand Slam Champion has never played the finals of the Western & Southern Open in his professional career.
He has reached the semi-final stage on two different occurrences but yet to gain a shot at the title.
Last year, he was dumped by the former American number one, Mardy Fish, in the quarter-finals of the tournament. He is not participating this time around and that means the 26-year-old Spaniard will have to wait for the next season
to have a shot at the missing title.
Nadal played his last encounter on the 28th of June against Rosol in Wimbledon. He was the defending champion of the gold medal at London Olympics but couldn’t participate due to the knee pain. The same problem kept
him out of the master cup in Toronto as well and now another miss will definitely cost him multiple points as well as a possible ranking slump if the fourth ranked Briton superstar, Andy Murray manages to secure some crucial points in the coming days.
